The general theoretical techniques used to develop the analytic techniques used for processing signal plus noise in a non-linear channel are described. The purpose is to provide an economical alternative to the Monte-Carlo methods used in simulation programs such as MODSIM. Channels are considered which consist of a filter by a memoryless nonlinear device and then a further filter. A program was developed to generate the moments of the noise at the output of the non-linear device. The noise probability density function is approximated by a weighted sum of gaussian density functions. The joint density function in time is obtained by matching the noise moments to the second order properties of the noise. Processing through the second filter is then achieved using characteristics functions.
