Fatigue testing of turned and notched (K sub t = 1.7) test specimens, which were glass bead peened, steel shot peened or sandblasted and, in certain cases, also anodized and varnished is reviewed. In all, six different surface treatments were investigated. The material was rough-forged aluminum satisfying SAAB material specification 3633-4 and was re-heat-treated from 3633-7. The fatigue testing was carried out partly as constant amplitude testing with R = 0 and partly as variable amplitude testing with JA37 flight program. Among the different surface treatments, glass bead peening (with or without subsequent anodizing + varnishing) achieved the best fatigue strength. Blasting + anodizing resulted in the lowest fatigue strength.
