Digital controllers for the vertical channels of a magnetic suspension system

The Southhampton University magnetic suspension system has an analog controller which is being replaced by a digital filter. During the first stage of conversion, two of the six degrees of freedom (vertical heave and pitch) were fitted with a digital version of the analog filters. Direct replacements for the analog phase advance filters were used and performance comparisons were made. A mathematical model of the magnetic coils and suspended model was developed for small angle use.
