Investigations of the structures of alloys crystallized at high rates revealed the following phenomena: metastable expansion in the solid solution, the formation of metastable phases which are absent in the equilibrium phase diagram, and the formation of amorphous phases which could form the basis of a new area of metallophysics and metallography. Two eutectics of germanium cooled at a rate of one million degrees centrigrade per second are examined.
