A synthesis method is used in the design of the electron gun for a 35 GHz gyrotron to be built at the Institute for Space Research (INPE). The synthesized equipotentials are obtained integrating a system of equations, whose boundary conditions are defined by the analytically extended self-consistent equations described the laminar flow. For laminar beams, with noninteresting electron paths, space charge effects cancel out and when compared to beams with intersecting trajectories, the velocity spread is greatly reduced. A systematic procedure for the design of axisymmetric electro-optical systems is presented, which allows the derivation of the synthesis parameters from the required characteristics of the electron gun. The synthesized gun is able to deliver a 215 kW electron beam with a calculated velocity spread of approx. 1%.
