A quasi-three-dimensional quadrilateral isoparametric finite element was developed for the linear-elastic and nonlinear static stress analysis of composite laminates subjected to a uniform in-plane load. Linear-elastic numerical results are obtained for the free edge stress problems of (0/90)s and (+/- 45)s laminates using the quasi-three-dimensional element. The element is also used to analyze variable thickness (stepped) laminated plates of infinite width. An initial stress iteration method using the quasi-three-dimensional element for the nonlinear analysis of CFRP laminates was developed.
