Dynamics of Viscoelastic Structures: A Time-Domain Finite Element Formulation

A new method for incorporating viscoelastic material damping into a time domain finite element model is developed. With the addition of new dissipation coordinates, viscoelastic element mass, damping and stiffness matrices are defined. The element matrices, all are symmetric and have appropriate definiteness properties, can be assembled to synthesize motion equations for general viscoelastic structures.
