The suitability of the energy-momentum tensor in the near field of cracks under superposed normal and shear loading and linear-elastic and elastoplastic materials behavior, for the determination of fracture hypotheses was investigated. Based on fracture-mechanical formulations of the loading in the crack tip domain, existing and deduced fracture hypotheses were determined and their predictions compared. It is shown that the local fracture criterion in a side-axis system, in which the diagonal elements of the tensor disappear, gives nearly the same result for the fracture deviation angle as the tangential stress hypothesis. The stresses occurring in the range of a crack tip, as well as the components of the energy-momentum tensor and the energy release rate were calculated using the finite element method, and compared with the analytically calculated values of the tensor, showing good agreement.
