The effects of a variation of the particle size of the filler, filler content, shape of the filler particles, and interfacial adhesion on the properties of four different thermoplastics were examined. The mechanical properties of chalk filled polypropylene; dewetting stress of glass bead filled polystyrene and polypropylene; dewetting stress of polystyrene filled with irregularly shaped chalk particles; dewetting stress of polystyrene filled with submicron titanium-dioxide particles; particle size dependence of the Young's modulus of filled polymers; particle size dependence of the elastic modulus of filled polymers; and the ultimate properties of glass bead filled styrene acrylonitrile polymer are discussed.
