Research on reciprocating elastomeric seals is reviewed. The aim is to contributeto the development of adequate theoretical models for leakage and friction as tools for design, and involves the modeling of the tribological process in the seal contact as well as proper experimental verification of theoretical predictions of leakage and friction. Attention is confined to axisymmetric, stationary and isothermal situation. Results are presented for a simple shaped polyurethane rod seal. Calculation by finite element method is studied. An approach to solve the elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem is developed and incorporated into a computer program PROGRES. Viscous shear stresses and the influence of seal roughness on the lubrication are investigated.
