摘要

For sealing reciprocating shafts against leakage of high pressure oil, a wide variety of commercial seals is available. They are generally made in part or wholly of synthetic rubber, though leather and plastic materials are also used. In the series of tests reported here 15 different designs of single-lip U-seal, all stated by the manufacturers to be suitable for sealing oil up to a pressure of 2 tons/sq. in, have been compared under identical conditions. All the seals were found to exhibit similar characteristics, but-great variations in numerical values of leakage rate and friction force were recorded. Six of the seals were similar in shape, size and material but were obtained from six different manufacturers. Here the effect of apparently slight differences in design-on leakage rate and friction was found to be considerable.
