Apogee, Perigee, and Recovery:Chronology of Army Exploitation of Space

During the past six or seven years, a debate has gone on within the Department of Defense (DoD) on whether it is appropriate for the Army to be increasingly involved in space and, if so, how should the Army exploit space. Although policy decision makers and senior operational commanders, who will influence the outcome of this debate, should be knowledgeable of the Army's historical role and utilization of space, few DoD personnel, classified documents, or open literature sources can explain the chronology of the U.S. Army in space, especially beyond 1961.
