The use of a portable x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy system to analyze bolts for material verification was investigated. A portable x-ray fluorescence analyzer was used to measure the elemental composition of 10-32 and 1/4-28 threaded fasteners. An aluminum disk with a threaded hole through the thickness was used to hold the bolts in place for consistent measurements. The results of the x-ray fluorescence analyses compared favorably to the results of elemental analyses by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The x-ray fluorescence system was able, within limits, to identify mixing of alloy types in a batch of fasteners.
