Effects of additives (MgO, La(sub 2)O(sub 3) and Y(sub 2)O(sub 3)) in the translucency of alumina

The effect of the addition of small amounts of Mg O, La(sub 2) O(sub 3) and Y(sub 2) O(sub 3) in the optical characteristics of the high purity alumina has been studied. Specimens with high transmittance in the visible region has been obtained. High purity alumina powders have also been obtained through the crystallization of ammonium alum.
