Nanocomposite/Hybrid Materials of Electroactive Polymers With Inorganic Oxides for Biosensor Applications

As proposed, we have successfully synthesized new electroactive and electronically conductive polyaniline polymethacrylate-silica nanocomposites and fabricated biosensor devices, aimed for detecting chemical and biological warfare agents with high sensitivity and reliability. As thin-film coatings on glass and gold electrode the conducting nanocomposites exhibit high conductivity of 30 S/cm and excellent adhesion to the substrates. We have tested the feasibility of embedding enzymes such as acid phosphatase in the nanocomposite films. Without optimizing experimental conditions, the protein denaturing occurs in the presence of highly acidic dopants. However polyaniline is not intrinsically incompatible with biological systems. Further investigation would lead to practical, nanocomposite biosensors based on the concepts explored in this project.
