It has been postulated that the final stage of the blood coagulation mechanism is influenced by electrostatic forces. For example, the rate and degree of polymerization of fibrinogen to fibrin in the presence of thrombin and the texture of the fibrin clot have been shown to be a function of the pH and ionic strength of the solvent. In addition, the biological activity of heparin may be attributed to electrostatic forces since heparin in solution at the pH of blood has a high negative charge. It is also known that solid surfaces will affect the rate of blood coagulation. For example, vessels coated with paraffin, collodion, and silicone retard the clotting time of freshly drawn blood as compared to glass containers. The explanation for these observations is at the present time unknown. However, it has been reported that electrostatic forces and selective adsorption phenomena are responsible for the differences in the reaction rate.
