The operating characteristics of a display element containing non-linear resistive, photoconductive, and electroluminescent components were investigated. A number of small EL cells, PCs, and a NLR (simulated with a neon lamp-resistor circuit) were used to observe the characteristics of series combinations of NLR-EL-PC components with light feedback from the EL to the PC. Addition of the NLR to the EL-PC element increased the turn on and turn off voltages of the bitable characteristic e This allows the element to be operated at higher brightness levels, while reducing the possibility of accidental triggering.
