摘要

Tests with Pyrex shock tubes confirmed this hypothesis. Observation of the shock phenomenon in regions free from strong electric fields also ruled out the possibility of an external electrical discharge triggered by the ultraviolet radiation. It was also found that the shock waves were suppressed by replacing the air surrounding the tube by an atmosphere of helium or pure nitrogen. From this it was concluded that the oxygen component in air was the primary absorbing gas.
