The report presents the experimental results of the evaluation of low-frequency, broad-band, free-flooding magnetostrictive scroll transducers, the design of which is based upon previous work done with high-frequency models. The bandwidth of free-flooding magnetostrictive scroll transducers may be increaded by properly coupling (or staggering) the cavity and mechanical ring resonant frequencies of the transducer. It is possible to achieve a usable bandwidth of about one octave; however, the broad-band scrolls have greater weight and lower peak efficiency than do the narrow-band scrools. In spite of their greater weight, free-flooding magnetostrictive scroll transducers have advantages over other types of transducers in that they are rugged, reliable, and easily constructed; they should be highly resistant to damage from explosive shock; and they are insensitive to hydrostatic pressure. In some applications, the advantages of free-flooding magnetostrictive scroll transducers may far outweigh their disadvantages. (Author)
