Impregnation of Anodic Films for the Protection of Magnesium Alloys,

The resin impregnation of Dow 17and H.A.E. anodic films on magnesium alloys has been investigated. A number of solvent free and solvent containing resins have been evaluated using dip and vacuum impregnation techniques. It was possible to effectively impregnate anodic films with a number of resins using a simple dip technique,but epoxy resins,particularly Araldite 985E gave the best corrosion protection. It is believed that a cost saving could be obtained by substituting a simple anodising-impregnating process for the rather lengthy and expensive surface sealing procedure of DTD 911C,although the impregnated anodic film may not be universally applicable. In close tolerance areas where very thin resin coats may be applied according to DTD 911C,coatings less than 0.001ins. thick would not be possible with impregnated anodic films. This would necessitate masking during anodising,with consequently less cost saving. (Modified author abstract)
