The significance of this research and development to the Air Force is the development of the tools and techniques required to assess the feasibility of using a minimum number of inertial sensors to provide the inertial reference information consistent with aircraft requirements for weapon delivery, flight control, navigation, fire control, and flight safety. Multifunction Inertial Reference Assembly (MIRA) is the term which describes the generic class of systems designed to meet this objective. Emphasis is placed on the development of a simulation capability for the evaluation of MIRA systems in realistic environments. A definition of the aircraft and flight-control system selected for the simulation is included along with a consideration of the inertial-sensor requirements for MIRA systems. Results demonstrating the capability of the simulation are presented. The life-cycle-cost implications of the MIRA approach are also dealt with. (Author)
