An investigation was conducted to determine the airflow characteristics in the vicinity of a model helicopter to determine representative flow velocities at the rocket trajectory and wind sensor locations of a hovering Army AH-1G Cobra helicopter. Laser velocimetry and flow visualization techniques were applied to provide flow velocity and wake geometry data for correlation with theory and for a systematic determination of the total and separate influence of each of the aircraft components (rotor, fuselage, and wing), and significant operating condition parameters (rotor thrust, tip speed, and ground effect) on the airflow influencing rocket trajectories. In addition, the flow velocities at potential locations for a fire control system wind sensor, mounted on the aircraft, were determined to assist in identifying wind sensor locations for accurately measuring flow velocities at hover.
