Determination of the Hit and Kill Probabilities for Shooting through Trees.

A methodology for the computation of the hit/kill probability of a high caliber weapon shooting in a forest is given. We assume that trees are distributed at random according to a Poisson Law. Bullets which hit trees with sufficiently high velocity can penetrate the trunks and continue towards the target. A model is provided for the determination of the distribution of the exit velocity of a bullet. Recursive method is given for the computation of successive exit distributions as functions of the initial (muzzle) velocity, the distances between the trees and their characteristics. On the basis of this recursive method the kill probabilities are computed. Numerical examples are provided as well as FORTRAN programs. (Author)
