This report describes a computer code which solves the wave equation for sound propagation in the ocean with arbitrary depth dependence and arbitrary but gradual range dependence of the sound velocity distribution. The present volume (vol. 1) is concerned with the depth functions which arise from the expansion of the velocity potential into a normal mode sum that leads to a near-separation of the range and depth dependent parts of the problem. The resulting depth functions satisfy locally a one-dimensional wave equation which together with the imposed boundary conditions defines an eigenvalue problem. The computer code described here permits to solve this problem for a wide variety of conditions. Deep ocean profiles can be treated for frequencies up to a few hundred Hz. For shallow water cases the frequency range easily extends to several kHz. A further volume of this report will deal with the range functions and with the solution of the mode coupling problem.
