An Annotated Bibliography of Congestion Control in Packet-Switched Communications Networks

The control of congestion in packet-switched networks is a topic which has attracted considerable interest particularly over the past few years when it has been recognised that effective congestion control is an essential feature of network design if reliable communications are to be maintained under adverse conditions, such as traffic overloading, failure situations and in damage. However, because congestion control necessarily embraces all other network control mechanisms, such as routing, flow control, deadlock prevention and buffer assignment strategies, the complex resultant control problem is difficult to analyse and is indeed still an active area of research. This paper provides an annotated bibliography of some of the more important publications in the open literature which deal with pertinent aspects of congestion control. (Author)
