This study involved the determination of tetryl hydrolysis kinetics in buffered aqueous solutions at 40, 72. and 85 C, and the identification and quantification of the major products of both light and dark hydrolysis reactions of tetryl. The kinetic data indicated a first order disappearance of tetryl for the buffered aqueous solutions at 40, 72, and 85 C, and a first order dependence on OH(-)ion at 40 C. The environmental hydrolysis (20 C and pH 6.8) half life of tetryl (t1/2 approx. 302 + or - 76 days) could only be estimated for a range of activation energies. The major components isolated from the hydrolysis study included: picrate ion, N-methylpicramide, methylnitramine, nitrate ion, and nitrite ion. Several other compounds were also formed but were not identified.
