Recently, it was reported that upon oxidation the micron-oxo bridged ruthenium dimer, ((bpy)2Ru(H2O))2O4+, has the remarkable ability to act as a catalyst for both the oxidation of water to dioxygen and of chloride to chlorine. We report here on an attempt to develop a catalytic chemically modified electrode based on the ruthenium dimer ion-exchanged into polystyrene sulfonate or Nafion.
