Roll-On/Roll-Off Automobile Transport Ships - An Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Requirements for Fire Safety

This project provided an experimental assessment of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) requirements for carbon dioxide (CO2) application rates on a Roll-On/Roll-Off ship. The assessment used a series of full-scale fire tests to determine the relative effectiveness of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and USCG requirements. The fire tests were conducted in a cargo hold of the MAYO LYKES modified to simulate a Roll-On/Roll-Off automobile carrier. The results of these tests indicated that the SOLAS carbon dioxide requirements were sufficient to extinguish flammable fuel fires and automobile fires in a cargo hold. (Author)
