Biodegradable poly (propylene fumarate) was synthesized and characterized for application as a moldable bone repair material which could be placed in a bone defect and subsequently cured to a hardened consistency within 30 to 35 minutes. Curing was accomplished by cross-linking with vinyl pyrolidone in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. In vitro degradation studies of the set material did not appear to demonstrate degradation rates conducive to mediating bone repair. In vivo studies were also negative. However, the data suggests that poly(propylene fumarate) has potential as a moldable bone repair material and further research will be required. (aw)
