Electronic quenching rates of various diatomic molecules have been reported for many years but there is still very little known about the detailed mechanisms of this collisional process. Many of the previous studies on electronic energy transfer have been centered on the gate-type model in which perturbations in the isolated molecule play a key role in the transfer process. Ths type of transfer, however, can be viewed as a form of rotational energy transfer because one or more rotational levels of an electronic state have properties of another state due to perturbations. The efficiency of transfer is related to the strength of mixing between these states. We have conducted laser double resonance experiments to measure the branching ratio for the rates of electronic transfer from two levels for 14N2+ and 15N2+.
