Simple Model for Amplified Spontaneous Emission in a Ti:Al2O3 Amplifier

Recently the time dependence of gain in a Titanium: Aluminum Oxide amplifier was measured. It was shown that the decay of gain was more rapid than expected when only spontaneous decay and energy extraction by signal amplification were responsible for depletion of the upper state. Although it was conjectured that amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) might be responsible for this difference, the apparent difficulty of calculating the effect of ASE inhibited pursuit of this conjecture. The influence of amplified spontaneous emission on the time-dependent gain of a laser amplifier is considered by using a simple model. Experimental measurements of Ti:Al2O3 amplifier gain are in excellent agreement with the model. Keywords: Decay, Reprints. (rh/AW)
