Study to Develop a Management Model for the Optimal Mix of Inpatient Services for Womack Army Community Hospital

Utilizing the available knowledge of Womack Army Community Hospital inpatient costs and those of CHAMPUS, a management model was developed that minimized the overall government cost for selected DRGs in the Fort Bragg Catchment Area. The quantitative technique used was linear programming. Constraints focused on available bed days, physician staffing, nursing personnel staffing, and estimated demand for services. Resources and their consumption rates are qualified. The model provides management with a timely, flexible, and quantitative means of determining resource allocation.
