Chemical engineering education is widely considered to have undergone a paradigm shift around the 1960s with the incorporation of transport phenomena in the curriculum. The publication of the text Transport Phenomena by Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot helped popularize the unifying treatment of momentum, energy, and mass transport based on microscopic or molecular description of processes. Whether inclusion of such treatment is warranted at the undergraduate level was debated vigorously in the subsequent decade or so, and despite occasional objections, a course (or sequence of courses) in transport phenomena is firmly entrenched in most undergraduate chemical engineering curricula.
