Shell’s efforts to resume drilling in the US Arctic hit an early setback when an icebreaker suffered a breach in its hull and was forced to return to port. The incident should not hinder Shell’s first exploration plans since 2012 for the Chukchi Sea, off northern Alaska, it says. But the firm acknowledged that it may be too early to know. “The answer will ultimately depend on the extent of the repairs required,” Shell says. “Repair options are being considered.” Shell has a second icebreaker in the flotilla of support vessels for its drilling programme.
