The tough economic conditions forcing Atlantic basin refineries to shut are pushing politicians to fight to keep some of them open. At least 1mn-2mn b/d of extra refining needs to shut in western European to help the viability of the remaining refineries, Valero chief executive Bill Klesse says. But he sees "political engagement here to keep uneconomic refineries running". Pressure to keep plants open is strong because "refineries offer a lot of well-paying jobs to people".
