Arch acquisition makes it major met-coal miner

Arch Coal Inc. is acquiring International Coal Group Inc. to become the second-largest U.S. metallurgical coal producer and the only U.S. producer with assets in every major domestic coal basin, it reported May 2. Arch is acquiring the shares for 14.60 dollars each, for an all-cash transaction valued at 3.4 billion dollars. The combined company will be a top-five overall global coal producer and marketer. Arch will have a balanced metallurgical and thermal coal portfolio with unparalleled op erational diversification in every major U.S. supply basin and the No. 1 or No. 2 position in each of its three core operating regions.
