Calcium Carbonate-Cellulose Fibre Composites;The Role of Pulp Refining

In the 14th Century,Italian papermakers formed paper under alkaline conditions with the addition of lime during the fibre beating process.This is said to have contributed to the permanence of early European handmade papers.Today,fillers are used to improve paper performance and to reduce production costs by substituting expensive pulp fibres with relatively lower cost mineral pigments.This latter function is especially important in the production of fine papers,where there is a large price difference between the chemical pulp furnish and the filler.
