Landscape architect/ ure. a brief account of origins

The title 'landscape architect' and its associated profession 'landscape architecture' very likely are derived from the French 'architecte-paysagiste', coined by Jean-Marie Morel at the beginning of the nineteenth century. I qualify the link because the genealogy of the English term is not as straightforward as Anglicizing a foreign neologism, or placing two English words one after the other. Indeed, the first coupling of the words 'landscape' and 'architecture' had little to do with a professional designation. This paper is an attempt to clarify the origins of the English term(s) and to underscore the centrality of the French connection.Morel coined the term 'architecte-paysagiste' because of the need to distinguish the designer of a newly emerging landscape typology — the English or picturesque garden — from the designer of traditional regular or symmetric gardens closely associatedwith Andre Le Notre.
