Sure Pure's UV sterilisation has gone from milk to beer. The photo-purification method uses light instead of heat to purify raw ingredients. The concept: SurePure is claiming a brewing-industry first with SABMiller's adoption of its UV sterilisation technology. The photo-purification method uses light instead of heat to purify the raw ingredients for the company's fruit-alcohol beverages at its plant in Chamdor, specifically Brutal Fruit, Sarita and Redds. The process has been developed by SurePure in South Africa and is also being incorporated by some wineries, thereby removing the need for sulphur dioxide and harsh, flavour-stripping filtration of the wine. SAB is looking at the potential of the new brewing process to replace or reduce the pasteurisation and/or sterile filtration of its beer. The application was developed specifically for SAB, which has the option to globalise the technology.
