New UK MHRA devices chief foresees more dialogue but less leniency

The appointment of John Wilkinson in February as director of medical devices at the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency1 - in the words of MrWilkinson himself one of the EU's "most sophisticated" healthcare product agencies -was significant.As a former chief executive of European medtech industry association Eucomed and before that director general of the Association of British Healthcare Industries, MrWilkinson is well known in the medtech sector; particularly in the UK, as a knowledgeable, straight-talking figure who, of course, understands well the views of industry.Having moved to the regulatory side and being a strong proponent of good communication, MrWilkinson is ideally placed to effectively facilitate dialogue between the regulator and industry, as well as with other stakeholders, such as notified bodies and patients.
