Since the mid-1990s, imaging-guided percutaneous core biopsy has been the method of choice for the biopsy of imaging-detected breast lesions. Advantages of core biopsy over open surgical biopsy include lower cost, less scarring, visible on the mammogram as well as on the breast itself, fewer complications, and faster patient recovery.1'2 In addition, performance of core biopsy rather than open surgical biopsy spares the patient risks related to sedation. Careful management of the patient after the biopsy is an integral part of the procedure and is important in maintaining the accuracy of the procedure. Postbiopsy management involves proper wound care, communication of results to the patient and referring physician, and management recommendations for the lesions once the pathologic results are known.
