The National Labor Relations Board (Washington, D.C.) has both significantly broadened the scope of what it considers protected employee conduct and boosted its efforts to inform employees of their rights "to act together for their mutual aid and protection, even if they are not in a union." These rights stem from the 1935 National Labor Relations Act, which established that employees-union or non-union-engage in protected, concerted activity when they talk with each other about their wages, hours, and working conditions, and that an employer may not discipline or discriminate against employees who engage in such discussions. Though the act is more than 75 years old, the NLRB has launched a new information campaign to highlight it.
