The 112th Congress, which began the first week of January 2011 and ends the first week of January 2013, ushered in an important shift in control on Capitol Hill. U.S. voters in the 2010 midterm elections gave Republicans a large majority in the House, leaving the Senate barely under Democrats' control. No one knew how the Republican majority in the House would function and what issues the Senate would address given the reduced number of Democrats in that chamber.
