PISELLO PROTEICO NELL'ALIMENTAZIONE DI BOVINE DI RAZZA REGGIANA: EFFETTI SULLA PRODUZIONE E SULLE CARATTERISTICHE DEL LATTE

Pea in the diet of Reggiana dairy cows: effects on milk yield and quality. - The effect of substituting soybean meal with pea in the fed of diary cows was tested in Reggiana breed, whose milk is transformed into Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. A concentrate composed by 15% flaked pea and 5% soybean meal ("P") was compared with a control one ("C"), providing 8,3% soybean meal, during two subsequent feeding trials. The first trial lasted four weeks and involved two groups of 30 cows, the second one lastedseven weeks and involved two gropus of 22 cows; forages were hay only (alfalfa and mixed lawn) in the 1st trial and hay+green herbage in the 2nd. Milk yield was recorded daily from all cows, and no difference was observed in the two feeding groups. Milkcomposition was periodically analysed on individual samples: no effect of the diet could be detected, except for an increase of urea at the end of the second trial (43,5 vs 35,9 mg/dL), which anyway didn't affect milk-dynamometer tracing. The results allow to state that pea can be included at maximum levels permitted by Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese production rules, without detrimental effects on milk production and cheese-making.
