This is a short, popular, but effective introduction to the topic of the relationship between capitalism and the environmental crisis. If readers also find they want a deeper and more theoretically articulated account of this relationship, they could also turn to other works by Magdoff and Foster. John Bellamy Foster is, of course, well known as arguably the leading theorist of ecological Marxism, which he has developed in a stream of books, such as The Vulnerable Planet (1994), Marx’s Ecology (2000), Ecology Against Capitalism (2002), The Ecological Revolution (2009), and The Ecological Rift (with Brett Clark and Richard York, 2010—reviewed by John Barry in Organization & Environment, 24(3)), in a number of journal and online articles, and since 2006 through his editorship of the independent socialist magazine The Monthly Review. Fred Magdoff, professor emeritus of soils in the Department of Plant and Soil Science at the University of Vermont, is the son of the economist Harry Magdoff, who was co-editor of Monthly Review from 1969 until he died in 2006. Magdoff’s work has generally been on the political economy of agriculture, but he also collaborated with Foster on an earlier book, The Great Financial Crisis (2009).
