THE MISSIONES PROVINCE OF Argentina extends north like a finger between Brazil and Paraguay. It is a region of huge rivers: Rio Parana with its huge hydroelectric project at Itaipu and Rio Iguazu with its immense cataracts, as well as the iron-rich red dirt and green plant life of the Atlantic rainforest contrast. The area is known as the "frontier" to those who have settled there. In this fertile area are two intrepid gentlemen whose passion is rescuing orchids from the dwindling forest.
