With a hot, dry summer being flagged as a possibility by weather forecasters and with ground water becoming scarce in some catchments, a Katikati field day last month on a monitoring system for soil moisture was of interest to kiwifruit growers.Toni Stringfield of Fruition Horticulture, based inTauranga, demonstrated the use of Diviner and EnviroSCAN soil moisture probes and the accuracy with which they can alert growers to the need for irrigation, or even reassure them that they can manage without.The EnviroSCAN sensors can also be used to detect salinity.
