Nigel Atkins is an outspoken businessman and promoter of ceramics. With his wife Suzy they established a pottery in the depths of rural France. She makes the pots and he sells them. Their story begins with a romantic sense of adventure - selling a camera to secure the purchase of thirty hectares of French wilderness in 1972. By 1977 the Poterie du Don was up and running with Suzy producing domestic and individual ceramics in saltglaze stoneware. By the 1990s Nigel reports that the pottery attracted 15,000 visitors a year; impressive stuff for a pottery hidden in a valley. The pottery and gallery outgrew demand, so a hilltop plot was found for a new building. Their new gallery, Le Don du Fel, opened in Le Fel in July 2007, and is ambitiously designated a centre for European contemporary ceramics. The grand plans helped them attract French and European funding for the 1 million euros project.
