Ivan Ivanovich Novikov (On His 90th Birthday)

On January 28, 2002, we celebrated the 90th birthday of Ivan Ivanovich Novikov, an outstanding scientist in the field of thermal physics, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and power engineering. Novikov was born in Ryazan' oblast; in 1939 he graduated the Physical Faculty of Moscow State University with honors. I.I. Novikov became renowned for his studies of the thermophysical properties of substances in a wide range of their states, especially for his studies of the working media of modern power engineering, such as steam and liquid-metal heat-transfer agents, and studies of structural materials. He established a new scientific direction in technical thermodynamic applications, namely, the optimization of working processes in plants to increase their efficiency. The Novikov-Curzon-Alborn theory of optimization of power complexes has been recognized and generally accepted all over the world.
