Determining the Shape of Working Teeth Surfaces in Disk Shavers for the Manufacture of Precision Gears

A method has been proposed for determining the shape of the working surfaces in disk-shaver teeth during the recessed shaving of cylindrical gears with technologically modified teeth. In this case, the machined gear-tooth surfaces are discretely specified, and consequently familiar analytical methods of tool profiling are unacceptable. It has been shown that a discretely specified gear-tooth surface may be represented analytically. The proposed method of machining discretely specified surfaces permits identification of the shape and parameters of the lateral tooth surface of the disk shaver, which is also defined discretely. Ultimately, the axial cross section of a faceted grinding wheel for use on disk-shaver teeth is found in discrete form. The proposed analytical method has been incorporated in the SHAVER program, which may be used in grinding disk-shaver tooth for recessed grinding of cylindrical gears with topologically modified teeth, on a mass-production scale in the auto industry. The proposed approach to disk-shaver shaping is based on the wide use of differential-geometric shaping of surfaces in machining.
